The HME filters are indicated for use with patients whose upper airways are being bypassed by an artificial tracheal airway or receiving artificial ventilator support. The main construction of the HME filte r is hme paper or sponge, which collects and utilizes heat and moisture in the exhaled breath to warm and humidify the inhaled gas, maintaining a constant temperature and humidity in the respiratory tract.
